5 Reasons Why Canes Suck (No offense intended!)

Wow, that was direct! Don’t get us wrong, canes serve a purpose but there are options that can help with mobility rather than being limited to a cane. Here are a few reasons we think canes suck:

Limited Mobility: A cane can only provide so much support. If someone’s mobility issues are more severe, a cane might not offer enough stability and could leave them feeling unsteady.

Inconvenient: Carrying a cane around can feel cumbersome, especially in crowded or small spaces. It can also make tasks like holding a bag or opening doors more complicated.

Social Stigma: Unfortunately, some people might associate using a cane with weakness or aging, which can lead to self-consciousness or negative perceptions from others.

Not Always Comfortable: Depending on the design, using a cane can sometimes be uncomfortable or strain the wrist or arm, especially if it’s not the right size or type for the person.

Limited Functionality: Unlike mobility devices like walkers or wheelchairs, canes don’t provide the same level of support for people with more significant mobility issues, leaving them less functional in certain situations.

While our headline might be a bit cheeky (and a bit self-serving!), we do want to remind all that there are cane alternatives. A set of walking poles can help provide the support, balance and stability that a cane lacks while looking pretty cool at the same time! Likewise, an adjustable forearm crutch can be a lot easier on the joints than a cane.
